The ombudsman's tasks are:
To provide objective and independent information about admission to graduate studies, financing, sickness and parental leave, unemployment benefits, as well as the requirements for defending your thesis and receive the doctoral degree.
To assist and support graduate students and act as a personal representative for students in conflict with their department. This may be direct conflicts regarding insufficient advising, failing of financing in spite of promises, the supervisor or head of department trying to prevent the graduate student to finish their thesis, conflicts regarding copyright and authorship etc. The ombudsman can also give advice and help in resolving problems, even if there is no severe conflict.
To investigate issues regarding graduate studies. Doktorandombudsmannen will survey the graduate students’ situation at Karolinska Institutet e.g. how they are financed, what kind of social security they have, if they get sufficient advising in their project etc.
